The first thing to realize is that in Ontario there is no regulating body for aesthetic services. What this means
is that anybody, even without training, can administer any non-surgical aesthetic service. Also, any licenced
physician may administer plastic surgery or injectables without specialist training. With this understanding,
you would be wise to apply the following criteria to your anti-aging service checklist. So when checking out a
service, ask yourself the following questions.
Remember, spas are not the same as anti-aging clinics. Spas usually offer pleasant rest and relaxation along
with beautification treatments. Anti-aging clinics exist solely to resolve facial aging issues, from simple
Revitalization through special Eye and Mouth treatments and on to Non-Surgical Facelifts. Products alone cannot
solve these concerns.
Invasive is when a surgical or aesthetic instrument penetrates the skin allowing potential infection to your system,
or potential bruising and scarring. Examples are plastic surgery, injectables such as BotoxR and acupuncture.
Non-invasive methods use techniques that do not break the skin. Do you really require surgery? Non-surgical procedures
are often just as effective, safer, and usually less expensive.
General certified aestheticians are usually taught a wide array of services, such as facials, manicure, pedicure,
waxing, and make-up, plus a variety of the latest fun fads. They are not taught in-depth anti-aging, although
they may have one course on it. Anti-aging is not simply another facial. It is necessarily complex, since
hormones, chemistry, cellular biology, physiology, nutrition and psychology, are all important ingredients to
anti-aging skin care. General aestheticians can excel in the general spa environment, but not in the field of
anti-aging. Few aestheticians understand why and how skin ages. Without this in-depth knowledge it is unwise
to apply anti-aging procedures and products. So ask to see all their certificates. Indeed, why not ask to see
their exam marks - hopefully well above 90%. You would not want your heart surgeon to have just scraped through!
Simply put, a service that offers a few anti-aging treatments and ten or so anti-aging products does not
specialize in anti-aging. Whereas, a service offering twenty or more anti-aging treatments with over a
hundred high quality anti-aging products is qualified to be called an anti-aging service. Don't settle
for less. The majority of them should be from a single supplier in order that the product ingredients
work well together.
Each year at the beauty expositions we see many varied technologies all touting how effective and
profitable they are. The experienced anti-aging specialist is able to analyse these marketing claims
and decide which are true and which are not. Neither the most traditional, nor the latest and greatest,
is necessarily the most effective for clients. Ask the aesthetician about the technology. If they
hand you a brochure with general statements of assurance, it's time to move on. Ask to see the equipment
and how it is used. Ask why it is safe to use with your treatment. Note also whether they analyse
your face with specialized equipment or simply use a magnifying lamp - because a specialist has equipment
designed to look beneath the surface of your skin and show up age-related issues. This is impossible to
do by visual inspection alone.
Does the service operate according to the Ministry of Health standards of hygiene and sterilization?
Are the instruments sterilized between clients? Are the applicators 'single use' and discarded in
Ministry-standard containers? Do the aestheticians wash their hands and apply plastic gloves before
touching your face? Is the equipment cleaned at the appropriate times according to the regulations?
Be sure to ask.
Does the aesthetician subscribe to life-long learning in their chosen field? Ask to see their
certificates of attendance at conferences and seminars. Ask what specialist magazines and books they
read. Being up-to-date means they are learning more about how to help you, which is what you are paying for.
How do you feel about the aesthetician? Do you feel confident in their professional knowledge and
ability. Do you feel unhurried, and that they want the best for you instead of what's best for the
aesthetician or the company? There are many incentives for aestheticians to sell particular retail
products and treatments, including commissions and bonuses. Be sure no such incentives exist with
your anti-aging skin care specialist - you would not want your doctor to be paid commission on your
medications! Most beautification spas do not have the time nor the expertise to do a complete analysis
and diagnosis of your aging issues. They need fast turnaround to remain profitable. A professional
consultation cannot be done properly in less than one hour, if it is to be reliable.
What age is the aesthetician? Are they recently out of high school, or are they a mature age?
Many aestheticians join the field for its glamour. The mature specialist is experiencing, or has
been through, the same aging issues that you may be going through. This is very important in order
for you to fully and freely communicate your concerns and be truly heard and understood.
It is commonplace in the glamour world for before and after photographs to be of air-brushed models
from agencies, as opposed to the service's own client's genuine before and after shots. Of course,
the clients would have to have given written permission to the service in order to allow their faces
to be shown to others. Check out testimonies from the service's clients who have received the same
treatment that you are interested in. Look for specific results, not broad generalizations.
Although it seems like a lot to check out, your face is precious, your skin tender. And you only
have one face! A little checking goes a long way. Best to start out with the one-hour consultation,
which is where you can find out all about your potential anti-aging skin care service and anti-aging
aesthetician. And maybe file this for future reference!
Liz discusses the concept of the
