On her 'Oprah Winfrey Show', February 18, 2004, Oprah Winfrey conducted a
tremendous show called 'Look Younger! Live Longer!'
Oprah, who's now 50, kicked off the show with the statement: 'An all-new OPRAH. How to
look like you had a facelift when you didn't. Celebrities swear by these high-tech facials.
I had one of these.' She continued 'I had an experience last night that I've never had in my life.
It was - it was rejuvenating, exhilarating. I came away from it feeling younger, having
a little kick in my step, feeling more alive.'
At the Natural Beauty Ant-Aging Skin Care Clinic we use the same skin care techniques! That's why our Clients
give us such wonderful endorsements. Check out our Endorsements page!
Diane Keaton, actress, 58 in January 2004, was interviewed by the Ladies Home Journal
in that same month. When questioned about plastic surgery, she had a clear answer:
Q: 'Now, you've said you're rampantly against plastic surgery - but you've also said
you always change your mind about everything. Have you changed your mind yet?'
A: 'No. Wish I could. I'm stuck in this idea that I need to be ... authentic. That's
just who I am. My face needs to look the way I feel.'
We agree! Let's be our natural best! Click on the picture for a close-up of Diane!
Liz was interviewed at the Clinic by Ashley Goodfellow of the Banner.
The article does an excellent job of describing our focus on non-invasive skin care
treatments. Just a wee note, though: we only cater to women! Click on the picture to read

non-invasive face lifts instead of the risky alternatives.
PRESS RELEASE
Natural Beauty Anti-Aging Skin Care Clinic
Issued April 20, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release # 04-02-2
Orangeville, ON (April 20) - Nestled in a beautiful area of Orangeville, where the old buildings have been
meticulously cared for down through the years, sits the fountain of youth. It's called the Natural Beauty Anti-Aging Skin
Care Clinic and is home to Dufferin's top Non-Invasive Anti-Aging aesthetic specialist, Liz Beavis. Beavis has
a joyful serenity about her that comes from living one's passion in life. She is clearly making a tremendous
impact on women's lives in Dufferin. When she talks about face lifts, wrinkles and lines, her quiet enthusiasm
oozes with her vast knowledge of skin aging, yet she is anything but intimidating.
Plastic Surgery
So when Beavis gave a free anti-aging seminar for women at the clinic on "Non-Invasive Treatments vs. Plastic
Surgery and Botox", you can imagine the response that got. Filled with facts and information not readily available,
Beavis had the total attention of everyone present. Facts, like there are 37 complications associated with surgical
face lifts, ranging from facial numbness, through hematomas, earlobe deformities, facial nerve injury, blood clots
and asymmetrical facial movement and expression, right up to death - to name a few! And she's right. On April 14,
this year, celebrated entrepreneur from Montreal, Micheline Charest, 51, died tragically the day after she was
hurried to the emergency ward from a local plastic surgery clinic with a complication from having a face lift by
plastic surgery. Beavis asked her audience if they were offered a 1 in 25 chance of winning ten million dollars
for a ten-dollar ticket, would they buy it? Every participant said they would. Asked why, they variously said that
the chances were so good that they thought it worth it. Beavis reeled in her ladies by asking them if they would go
for a surgical face lift if there was a 1 in 25 chance of a complication developing. Not one taker. Beavis explained
that according to a 1994 research report by Rees et al, that women have a 4% chance of developing complications during
cosmetic surgery. The figure for men is 8%. "However," continues Beavis, "when you're in that 4%, for you it's 100%,
like Charest." Although there are gifted plastic surgeons, Beavis shocked everyone by stating the fact that any doctor
in Ontario licensed to practice medicine may legally practice cosmetic surgery or cosmetic injectables without having
any specific training in these fields.
Of course, there have been many successful cosmetic surgery operations, but is it really worth the risk? Starting
around $8,000 for a face lift, it is also expensive. Surgical face lifts last only 5 to 10 years depending on the
patient's age, before they must be repeated. Beavis said, "the outcome of a surgical face lift is never completely
predictable, since many factors come into play, and considering that surgical face lifts simply stretch the skin over
the face, they don't remove the causes of wrinkles and lines, so those naughty crow's feet and forehead lines will
eventually come back!" After covering other procedures such as eyelid lift, forehead lift, dermabrasion, laser skin
resurfacing and chemical peel, Beavis focused on injectables.
BOTOX
Injectables, like surgery, are invasive techniques. Beavis informed us that whenever the skin is penetrated past the
top layer, whether by syringes, acupuncture needles, dangerous chemicals, or physical or laser methods, then an
invasive procedure is being used. Botox is one of a group of cosmetic injections collectively called injectables.
Botox is actually the Botulinum Toxin Type A, a deadly toxin that paralyzes muscle cells. Through eating tainted
food, the unpurified form may be ingested. If it reaches the diaphragm muscle, this muscle becomes paralyzed and
the patient cannot breathe. However, successful use of purified Botox can alleviate medical conditions such as Cerebral
Palsy in children, by paralyzing specifically targeted muscles and muscle groups. Cosmetic use of Botox is Health Canada
approved as BOTOX(r) Cosmetic for the temporary treatment of frown lines of people aged 18 to 65. As Beavis taught us,
although this substance can be used legally in Canada to temporarily reduce frown lines, there is a legal loophole used
by the medical community, which is called "off-label use." "This is when products are proven safe and effective for
one use on one type of patient, then get used in other ways or for other types of patients," Beavis said. So BOTOX(r)
Cosmetic practitioners apply Botox injections to many parts of the face in order to reduce lines by paralyzing the
muscles. Beavis rhymed off half a dozen complications including droopy eyelids, Botox muscle migration, and adjacent
muscle over-compensation. Apparently, when a muscle is paralyzed, the muscles around it compensate for its inactivity.
This can lead to a mild inability to make facial expressions through to facial distortion. Beavis noted that Botox
cannot improve sagging skin, nor improve wrinkles caused by aging and sun-damage, since these wrinkles are unrelated
to facial muscle contractions. Interestingly, Botox injections last only three to four months, at which time a further
application is necessary. "At around $700 a shot, this can be expensive," said Beavis.
Restylane and Perlane
After the seminar, Beavis described more about injectables. The latest craze is from Sweden. An injectable
family manufactured by Q-Med Esthetics, is called Restylane and Perlane. The company claims they contain a
Hyaluronic Acid derivative, similar to that manufactured in the body. Beavis said, "Restylane is used for soft-tissue
augmentation in Europe and Canada, but is not yet FDA approved in the United States.
These injectables are derived from streptococcal bacterial fermentation, and are used to treat rhytids and scars and
in lip augmentation." Perlane is a more robust form of Restylane for use in the deep dermis and at the dermal-fat
interface. The manufacturers further claim that Restylane and Perlane have less risk of clumping and go
in more smoothly, and that overcorrection is not needed with these products. "However," Beavis said, "the point is that risks
do exist, that clumping can occur, and correction is very difficult due to the nature of the treatment." Beavis,
gathering momentum, continued, "Despite the minimally invasive form of injectable dermal fillers, the chance for
complications always exists. What complications? The common complications are bleeding or bruising, bacterial infection,
viral infection, allergic reactions, and superficial beading of overlying skin. Less common, but more serious, are cystic
reactions, local skin necrosis - which means skin death, blindness - when used near the eye, anaphylactic reaction - a severe
allergic reaction that occurs rapidly and causes a life-threatening response involving the whole body, stroke, and
tragically, even death." One has to wonder if it's really worth the risk.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture, as applied to facial anti-aging, has had no credible research results to date. "Although practitioners may say
that acupuncture is non-invasive, it clearly is, since the needles pass through all the skin layers. This is the very
definition of 'invasive'," said Beavis after the seminar.
Non-Invasive Treatments
According to Beavis, the safe alternative to invasive procedures such as plastic surgery, Botox and other injectables,
and acupuncture, is the use of non-invasive technology applied in concert with applications and the facial massage of
specific muscles. The applications are high quality anti-aging creams, oils, and ampoules derived from strictly
controlled plants, extracts, oils and essences. The treatments vary from full non-surgical face lifts, through
lymphatic drainage (by massage, not tubes!), diminishing wrinkles, lines and crow's feet, as well as eye issues,
redness and age spots. Truly, this is a one-stop shop. Beavis describes the process as analogous to keeping fit.
"We exercise initially to lose weight and become fit. Then we exercise to maintain our fitness and health. This
is also true with facial muscles and skin. We must exercise them, provide them with appropriate applications to
nourish and protect the skin, and assist them to become like they were when they were younger. Then we need to
maintain them." Beavis applies what she teaches. She has a beautiful complexion for her years, teasing us by not
telling us her age. It was easy to calculate that with 32 years of marriage behind her, she has cared for her skin
meticulously, and the treatments work. Beavis jests, "I test new treatments on my husband, and if he survives, I
apply then to myself!"
Although the clinic environment is as peaceful as the most luxurious spa, Beavis explains that their trademarked
motto is "Pampering with Purpose." Beavis cites examples of clients gently falling asleep as she administers the
treatments. This certainly supports her promise that there is no pain in any of the treatments. This is a far cry from the
anaesthetic environment of plastic surgery and injectables.
How Effective Are the Treatments?
Oprah Winfrey said on her show February 18, 2004, "Look like you had a facelift, when you didn't! Celebrities
swear by these high tech facials!" Oprah, who herself had a non-surgical face lift, was ecstatic about the
results. This is the same method used by Beavis. Diane Keaton, in Ladies' Home Journal, January 2004, when
asked if she was still "rampantly against plastic surgery," explained that she has a "need to be authentic,"
which seems to mean that she wants to be natural, herself. At the local level, a client of the clinic who attended
the seminar came with the intention to better understand skin care. She declined to give her name, but looked much
younger than her 51 years, thanks to the treatments applied by Beavis. When first-time attendee Leslie Wilford,
learned this client's age, she reeled back in astonishment and said, "You don't look your age! And you've only
been treated since January?" Beavis's client answered, "My friend and I both come here, and we're delighted with
the results we see in ourselves and in each other. And it's so relaxing." Beavis explained that this is a common
response to the results experienced by her clients. Said Beavis, "While a lady was waiting to receive our offer
of a free skin analysis and consultation, one of my clients was just leaving. After she left, the lady commented
with astonishment that my client's complexion was beautiful and radiant. I had to explain that she had done everything
I had recommended her to do, and was benefiting accordingly." Beavis smiled, "Needless to say, she became a client.
Interestingly, the client who had just left, had been on the verge of deciding on plastic surgery as her friends had
done, changing her mind when I described the potential complications. She has said how happy she is that she called
me."
Clients come from as far south as Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville, west to King City and Caledon, east to Erin
and Kitchener, and north to Shelburne on up to Dundalk. Louise Piercey, who had
driven from Brampton to attend, found the seminar "very informative" and was clearly convinced. The list of over
twenty treatments is impressive, and allows for very precise solution design according to her client's specific needs
and desires. Beavis was quick to explain that Natural Beauty Anti-Aging Skin Care Clinic deals only with women's anti-aging
concerns, and therefore concentrates its expertise in this one area. "We continue to put our full energies into
anti-aging solutions, and thus have become experts in our field." The clinic's web site at
www.NaturalBeautyAnti-AgingSkinCareClinic.ca is packed with tips and advice in their onsite NewsLetters, has descriptions
of treatments, describes upcoming seminars, and has endorsements and press releases to view. Natural Beauty Anti-Aging Skin
Care Clinic offers a free 45 minute skin analysis and consultation by calling 519-216-SKIN (7546). The demand for
anti-aging services reflects a growing trend in North America as the baby boomer population ages and searches for
the fountain of youth. They may just have found it at Natural Beauty Anti-Aging Skin Care Clinic, and it's right on our
doorstep in Orangeville!

Follow-up to the Micheline Charest tragedy: The following excerpt is from CTV.ca News Staff, updated April 15, 2004.
Autopsy to be performed on co-founder of Cinar
An autopsy will be performed on Micheline Charest, the 51-year-old co-founder of the Cinar animation company, who died
following cosmetic surgery. Charest died Wednesday during recovery from the seven-hour procedure. Sources say she had
been undergoing a face lift, liposuction and breast reduction, however that has not been confirmed. The precise cause
of Charest's death hasn't been determined but many doctors believe it was likely an adverse reaction to the anesthetic.
"I think the stress of being under anesthetic is a distinct stress on your heart, and on your lungs," says plastic
surgeon Dr. Marietta Zorn. Zorn says deaths from cosmetic surgery are rare. But she worries that as plastic surgery
becomes more popular, complications from the surgery will increase. "It's because more and more people are doing it
but also because there is an older age group who's doing it as well, so you will see a rise in the complication rate,"
she predicts.
Plastic surgeon Peter Neligan says the popularity of shows such as "Extreme Makeover" give people the misguided idea
that plastic surgery is quick and simple. "They tend to trivialize plastic surgery in certain ways so that the public
is led to believe that plastic surgery is very straightforward and simple," he says. Plastic surgeons are required
to take five years of training beyond medical school. But Neligan says most provinces don't require doctors performing
cosmetic surgery to be accredited plastic surgeons. "Because cosmetic surgery is a very lucrative business, a lot of
physicians get into the business of cosmetic surgery without having the proper training and accreditation in it."

Interesting to note is that in March 2004 the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery urged cosmetic surgery patients
to choose procedures that could be done using local anesthesia in order to avoid a general anesthetic. It also warned
against performing multiple complex procedures in a single operation.
